FRISCO, Texas – McNeese’s Havana Johnson, Central Arkansas’ Kristen Ricks and Houston Baptist’s Alanis Guevara are the Southland Conference Soccer Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. Defensive Player of the Week: Kristen Ricks, Central Arkansas – Sr. – Keller, TexasRicks continued to be a force on both fronts for Central Arkansas this past weekend. She led a defense adjusting to the loss of fulltime centerback Alex Wetteland, shutting out Incarnate Word on Sunday 6-0. Ricks also took over the conference lead for assists, tallying a pair against the Cardinals, playing a cross into the both in the ninth minute for Camille Bassett before playing a ball across the box to Bria Williams in the 26th minute. This is Ricks’ third weekly honor of the year. Offensive Player of the Week: Havana Johnson, McNeese Johnson notched a goal in both games over the weekend for McNeese. The sophomore forward scored goal number four of the year when she tied the game at one apiece in the 66th minute Friday against Stephen F. Austin. She then needed just three minutes of Sunday’s contest at Sam Houston State to put the Cowgirls up 1-0 before assisting on another in the 74th minute to lead McNeese to the 3-1 win. Johnson had three shots on goal in the first five minutes of the game. Johnson also won the offensive award August 28. Goalkeeper of the Week: Alanis Guevara, Houston Baptist – Sr. – Cedar Park, TexasEarning wins on back-to-back days, Guevara became HBU’s all-time leader in wins with 25 for her career. The senior turned away six shots out of seven on target Sunday afternoon at Southeastern Louisiana before recording her fourth shutout of the season on less than 24 hours of rest on Monday afternoon at Nicholls. The Cedar Park, Texas, native has now won two weekly awards this season. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
